Who else would like the chance to pay off their student loan in less than 12 months by landing a high-paying job in Japan?
Scott's story:
Chikako phoned me from Tokyo to complain about Scott.
"Listen, Barbara," she said. "This guy's resume was pretty solid - a few things missing, no big deal. But there were two problems when I took him through the telephone interview."
"What were the problems?" I asked.
Chikako, Hawaiian-born but with Japanese heritage, is a top recruitment manager in Tokyo and a regular contact for our Japanese candidates returning to Japan and looking for interesting new jobs. It was one of these candidates, Hanako, who had introduced me to Scott - Hanako's boyfriend.
Scott was an accountancy graduate, working with a big firm in Auckland. He was the first New Zealander whose C.V. I had sent through to Chikako.
"I spoke to Scott first in Japanese," Chikako told me. "He told me that he'd studied the language for two years in high school - said he'd forgotten a lot of it during his university years. But his pronunciation was fine, and his vocabulary was pretty good. It was his English that I had a problem with."
"His English?" I asked, startled. "Do you mean his New Zealand accent?"
"The accent's fine. Kind of cute the way you people talk," said Chikako. "But Scott kept using kiwi slang expressions. It was a real struggle for me to understand what he was telling me. Can you talk to him for me? I want to set him up with telephone interviews with one of our top client companies and it's really important that he sticks to standard English - no slang. And he needs to slow it way down.
"But that wasn't the main problem. The thing is, he had one crucial bit of information that wasn't in his C.V. and that he didn't tell me about. I got it out of him right at the end of the conversation, when I was just about to drop his C.V. into the trash. It's the one thing that's going to give him a big advantage over other candidates, and he didn't even think to mention it!"
(Chikako told me what the missing piece of information was. You may have already worked out what it was. To confirm your hunch or if you have no idea, send me an email and I'll explain!)
"Anyway," Chikako concluded. "Scott's got potential. He needs to do some more work on his C.V. I'm going to send you through a list of things he has to do to get it up to Japan standards. And you'll talk to him about his telephone interview techniques, right?"

Hello! I'm Barbara Takase. I'm a Director of Career Up Ltd. I've been working with young Japanese people for more than 20 years, helping them find working holiday jobs in New Zealand and also helping them move into new careers when they return to Japan after studying English in New Zealand.
Scott's story was what inspired us at Career Up Ltd to develop a new E-class for young New Zealanders planning to work in Japan.
It's a practical, user-friendly course to help people land a well-paid job in Japan. The course consists of 3 email classes, with exercises and homework.
It's done entirely by email. You'll also get my coaching by email. This will be for your convenience as well as mine.
You won't have to sit in on a conference class or drive to seminars. You'll receive the lessons by email, do the work as your schedule permits, answer my questions by email, and get my feedback by email. It's quick and easy.
You can finish all the lessons in just three weeks.
・ What are the Japan recruitment standards for a C.V. or resume?
・ One part of the job application process that most applicants lose sleep over - but which really doesn't matter at all.
・ 4 fatal errors that can send your C.V. straight to the wastepaper basket
・ How revealing your "X Factor" will make you stand out in a crowd of qualified and eager applicants.
・ What are the hidden advantages of telephone interviews?
In Lesson One you'll get an insider's understanding of the vital Curriculum Vitae (C.V. or resume). You'll find out how to make your C.V. stand out from the others. You'll learn about the four fatal errors which sabotage a C.V.'s chances. You'll find out three important things you can do to add greater value to your C.V.
If you haven't updated your C.V. lately, now's the time to get started using our easy-to-use template.
If your C.V. is already up to date, this is the time to have it checked to make sure it is complete, error-free and up to Japan standards.
And you'll learn the crucial step of writing an attention-grabbing Career Objective Statement relevant to the specific job you're applying for.
This lesson's assignment is to perfect your C.V. And I'll be giving you individual help to make sure that's done.
It's rare these days for anyone to be invited to a face-to-face interview in Japan without first completing a telephone interview. The telephone interview may be with a counselor from a recruitment agency or with a human resources officer from the employing client company.
It's make or break.
Mess up the telephone interview and it's "game over" for that job.
So Lesson Two is all about preparing for the crucial telephone interview.
I'll take you step-by-step through our proven 5-step preparation formula. Complete your preparation thoroughly, and you'll have a much greater chance of making a positive impression in the telephone interview.
You'll learn how to handle tricky questions. And how to turn them around and use them to your own advantage.
Lesson Three gives you a clear 7-step strategic plan for a real telephone interview. You'll learn some valuable tips to motivate yourself into your best possible interview performance. You'll learn how to make the most of the advantages of the telephone interview situation and how to neutralize the disadvantages.
Best of all, you can soak up all of this knowledge when and where it suits you. There's no need to struggle through the city to make a class.
You can cover the materials at home, working with your computer or your laptop. Or in a coffee shop. Or on a park bench. You can do it whenever it suits you - first thing in the morning, or last thing at night.
And it's the same with the homework assignments. You'll have plenty of time to complete them and send them back to me.
Here's how the E-Class works:
Each week I will email out one full lesson. Each lessonhas a practical assignment to complete. You can send back your assignment by email and let me have any questions.
I will then answer you and give you specific feedback. In this way you'll not only get the lessons, but you'll also get my personal e-coaching as well. We'll do all of this by email, simplifying the process for both of us.
How much will this cost? If you paid my hourly rate for personal instruction over a three week period, you would have to pay many hundreds of dollars.
But since we're in a high-tech age, I'm able to offer this programme, all the information and systems, plus all my help and coaching for only NZ$145.
And it costs less than a new cell phone or a good haircut.
Yes, I know there are lots of books and information out there about how to apply for a better job. You can buy that kind of information. But your investment for this E-class gets you all the information you need AND my personal mentoring. What you are buying is my coaching.
Is the course guaranteed?
Yes, it is.
Sign up now. If you're not happy after the first lesson, let me know and you can have ALL of your money back.
Will the course work for you? It's up to you. I'm giving you the strategies and the tools. How you use them and what you make with them is going to be up to you. But my advice to you is : AIM HIGH!
Aren't you worth it? Isn't it time to make your dreams come true?
